The first day in the life of a Tomato Hornworm
An egg four days before hatching.
Hours before emergence, the head is visible inside.
Newly emerged, the tail is small and pale.
First meal is the egg shell.
Afetr an hour, the tail is getting color.
Another hour later and about two-thirds done with a nice black tail.
This is a different caterpillar working on it's egg.
Almost finished.
Now it's time for some real food and some color. Look at the size of that tail!
At the end of the day, it has gotten a nice green color.
